Rumble Racing has the promise, the premise and the look of a solid racer. Unfortunately for me, I do not believe so.
The gameplay is fast, furious and a little bit fast and furious at both times. Blazing speeds through straights, and gravity defying tricks over the jumps, this game has the makeup of a really rad racer. Unfortunately, the racing is reminiscent of cart fury, the cars are easily controlled, rarely spin out, and don't really show much affects of hitting walls and getting blasted. The tricks are rather lame, as you just hold down the r2 and use the direction of your d-pad or analog stick to spin or rotate. The one thing I do enjoy is the dual analog support, and the right is used for acceleration and the left for steering (just a great feel). The game tries desperately to be a fun, addiciting racer, and even mimmicks mario kart a bit (with the power ups), but really falls short with its controlled gameplay.
The graphics are good, but nothing to write home about. The cars/vehicles are the game's saving grace, as it seems to be fun to just see the awesome vehicles of selection. Okay, maybe a few exceptions to the messed up special vehichles like the tomcat, the thor, and some other odd balls. The muscle cars look really nice, and the animations are good as well. Its fun to watch cars fly and zip around after you've give them a taste of the special boosts. The courses are well designed, and the backgrounds are decent, this game is not very hard to enjoy looking at (its well done). The game has the look to be a good racer, but manages to fall short once again.
The replay value on this game is the sole reason I haven't returned it yet, because there is a plethora of things to unlock. If you don't like working for your rewards, you can cheat, but that's not all that fun, unless you don't save the cheats and just use the extras in the multi-player mode. The multi-player is pretty good, and you can even do a co-op circuit, which is nice. The premise is again ready and willing to make up a great racer, but once again, manages to fall short (which is really frustrating).
-----------
The bottom line:
The racer is a good one, but not a great one. Maybe a little more control (and a lot less control too) of how your vehicle moves, flips, spins, and crashes. It just seems to be wanting too much, and not giving enough. However, this game is not all bad, and if you're tired of sim racers or shoot up racers, this game combines the two aspects (ala mario kart) and may get your fix for a weekend.
