I'm sorry Tony, this game just isn't what it should have been. THPS2 still has the upper hand. The graphics are sweet, and the music is good, but not much else has changed.
The Gameplay in Tony Hawk is very familiar to the series and has a little more balance than 1 and 2 (In part one, grinds were more rewarding, while in part two, big air and tricks were the case). The controls are right at home with 2, and it feels as though the only thing changed has been the deletion of bobby burnquist (why? because he did ESPN's?). I kind of thought next generation skateboarding would be a step up from the PSX, but I was wrong. Most of the trick animations look the same, and the addition of a few nastier spills make the game feel just right. I's still a fun and entertaining game, and if you like the levels in 2, you will like what 3 has to offer. All the game play modes are back, and the online feature promises to be compelling. However, I really don't see the need of the online option just yet. Let the Xbox worry about that stuff for now, Sony's time will come.
The graphics in THPS3 are breathtaking. The skaters look very smooth and realistic, and the environments are excellent. Little details on just about everything really show you that PS2 doesn't always have the jaggies. However, the game is not without them. I haven't witnessed any framerate problems, and with the control of your character, everything looks to be insync. THPS3 has some pretty flashy eye candy, and it should fulfill your graphical gratitude.
The Replay value on THPS3 is the same it is in the series. IF you have some friends that want to tear it up in Trick Mode, then you are set for a good night of grinding it out. The Career/Season is true to form with the first two, and you compete for medals to progress in the game. The returning modes help keep Tony Hawk playable, although 2 will have you entertained longer. It is also fun to create a
skater take him/her through the ranks. My friends and I had some pretty good looking characters that made us want to keep playing so they could tear it up. Tony Hawk 3 is a good game, but don't worry about having it if you own 2, unless you've ruined your copy of it by playing it way too much.
