You like to blow stuff up? Sure you do, otherwise why even buy a video game system? Merceneries is a 3rd person shooter game that plays off every guy's natural urge to make things go all explodie.

The story is complicated, so I'll try to summerize it. Imagin if the leader of North Korea was killed and his whacko son came to power? Now imagen that he was so hated that he ended up going to war with not just South Korea, but also with against the UN and even China. Throw in the Russian mafia looking to make a buck in weapons deals and you have a pretty bad scene. This is where you come in. You are a special mercenary called in to make some big bucks by offering your services to the UN, South Koreans, Russian Mob, even the Chinese (They are in such a bad way that they are willing to over look the fact that you are a capitalist out to make money).

The game play is simple. You run from one base to the other in order to take on missions that can range from saving people, to defending towns, to taking bases, and everything in between. The big bucks are in capturing the government officials of the fallen North Korean dictatorship. Each of them is represented as a 'card' in a deck of 52, the leader of each branch being an 'ace' card and the ones below being lesser ones you have to capture to get intel on where the ace card is. You capture the ace card, you get a big fat reward and move on to the next part of Korea. You can capture these guys for the full reward, but if you go gun happy and kill them, you can photo I.D. them for half the bounty. The game lets you choose between 3 mercs, each having their own voices and personalities which is fun to listen to as you hear their thoughts on factions and missions, and also each is good at something (One is good at camo, one is good at running, and one can take more damage then the others).

The game has many features that are fun. For one, almost everything can be destroyed. Buildings of all shapes and sizes will usualy come down when hit enough times. Taking a page from GTA, you can also hijack vehicles. You can pull people out of trucks and APC's, chuck in a gernade and hijack a tank, or kick out a pilot of a helicopter. The vehicles all have different armor, speeds, and weapons, so you will most likely find a favorate. As you do missions, factions will start to favor you and will offer back up if you get shot at while in their turf. Watch out, because when you do missions that anger other factions or accidentely kill a soldier from that army, they will start to dislike you and may shoot you on sight. Everything costs money, and if you cannot steal it or find it in a supply box, you can order it via the black market. You can buy almost anything, from weapon and supply drops, gernade and C4 supplies, artillery bombardments, laser guided bombardments, and vehicles. Did I mention bombs? There are a huge number of different ways to blow things up. If gernades are too puny, try C4 to knock down something. C4 not doing it? Get a tank to blow it up. Tank no good? Get artillery sweeps to flatten an area. Artillery to innacurate? Get a laser guided bomb dropped on a building. Need more bombs? Get a stealth bomber sweep strike. Still not enough? Call in a bunker buster to get those hard-to-destroy bunkers totaly busted wide open.

This game is very fun, and even if you ignore the missions its still fun simply tracking down the bounties and just flat out harrasing the North Korean army at every turn. They will always fire on you and cannot be reasoned with, so why not show them that you dont appretiate being a target for them? The only reason that this game is not perfect is that the controls are very hard to get used too. Its difficult to adjust to the confusing control scheme and you will often accidently throw gernaded when you really wanted to simply get into a vehicle, or drop one bomb from a bomber when you wanted to do a sweeping bombardment. Also large vehicles tend to get stuck very often and this can be a real hastle when you get a big tank and suddenly it gets stuck on a bump in the road thats so small you can hardly see it. Besides these little flaws, the game is very fun and is worth a buy, or at least a rental.
