For once I'd like to play this card game on an actual consol, instead of some off-kilter knock off using similar themes but having nothing in common game play wise with the original.

In Yu Gi Oh Capsule Monster Coliseum, you will be playing through as Yu Gi as he tries his luck at a new style of game with similar characters from the card game he is so good at. As you play, you will challenge characters from the show, ranging from characters from the dual island story, to the battle city and Egyptian god card saga. Fans of the series will enjoy the voice acting from the original TV cast.

Of course, since this is a consol game, you will be playing a game nothing at all like the Yu gi oh card game. Instead, you set up a collection of monsters that you select from at the start of every battle. Once both players pick their monsters, you are sent to a theme field (Swamp, space station, factory, city street, ect.) where various bits of the field will offer pluses and minuses to monsters based on their relation to the field (ex. A fire monster does better near fire, but does worse in water). The fight starts with a main piece that acts like a king-piece, placing monsters around it's self, offering buffs to monsters of the same type, and able to move a space to avoid damage. The monsters themselves sit as eggs or 'capsule's until you have enough AP points to 'hatch' them, which allows them to move and attack. Each monster has its own range of attack and movement, some moving and attacking in a '+' direction, while others will move or attack in a 'X' formation, and so forth. The key to winning is simply moving your pieces on the map, avoiding damage from scenery and other monsters, and destroying all the opponent's monsters by matching your strengths up to their weaknesses. You can also win by destroying your opponent's king piece, but the same goes for you so you have to be careful. Pieces go up in level as they destroy other monsters or just happen to survive the battle.

There are a few flaws. For one, the only strategy is simply knowing what pieces your opponent will use and using pieces that are strong against their monsters, such as fire against wood, water against fire, and so forth. Your opponent will almost always have the advantage of a field that favors their pieces and causes damage to yours. You can take a few of your opponents pieces after a fight, but you will later find yourself in trouble when your opponent's pieces are much higher level then yours. You cannot fight opponents more then once, so you have a strict limit of how many levels you can up your monsters, and will have lots of weak pieces or a few strong ones that won't have the advantage of being able to fight one or two opponents because of their type.

It's an ok strategy game for those who like chess or other basic games, but its wont WOW anyone or win any awards for game play or graphics. Just another simple game using licensed characters from other games.
