Time to go back into the world of ainchent China and bust some heads. Dynasty warriors tells the tale of a period in China's history where the country was in constant war and strife, and also saw the largest number of hero's to appear in a relitively short amount of time. The game sets you in the role of one of these heros as you attempt to fight for your place in history.
The game, if you have never played it, is very simple. You run around and knock enemies around and defeat the army opposing yours. Rather then doing this alone, you are part of an army, so you have to listen to orders and protect your army so you are not left stranded on the battle field. Each character uses a different weapon and style of fighting. New additions to the game includes new characters, like Cao Pi, Son of the leader of one of the 3 kingdoms, Cao Cao. The game brings back the weapon capture system from DW3, so you can pick up different levels of weapons, some with bonuses like inceased speed or health. The game also has two new additions to this in the form of weapon weight, heavy weapons moving slow but doing more damage and lighter weapons working the opposet, and powered weapons, which lets your characters do a 8 to 9 basic hit combo when their muso gadge is full.
The bodyguard system is changed, allowing for you to have one beefed up bodyguard rather then a number of weaker ones. Some bodyguards have special abilities, like dropping health pickups and raising their defense when low in health. There is also a new trick that lets you and your bodyguard do a dual, muso attack when close togeather. There is a new Muso Rage system which lets you go into a berzerk mode where you can move much faster, launch true-muso attacks, and hit harder. Also, there are bases in the game which act as points of interest; attack bases lobbing annoying arrors, rocks, and balista shots to disrupt troops, defense bases which act as gates or just obsticals, and supply bases which randomly increase health and moral for friendly forces nearby.
The series has been improving on the quality of the voice acting since the second game, and its even better on 5. The stories are also more involving to better show the events that make up the lives of each character's campaign. The game also removed the bland kingdom story mode from the last installment and brings in an improved story mode that goes into deep detail for all of the characters, giving insightful ideas of their thoughts as they move from one battle to anouther.
The graphics are slightly improved from the last installment, but its hard to tell. Also the music is still the same heavy metal sounds you have heard through the other games, some songs even recycled. The game has not changed too much to make it stand out other then it is a more fine-tuned version of the other games. Its a new improved game for anyone collecting the series, but if you get burned out of 'more of the same' type games, then this one may end up boring you in the long run.
