Ah. To have my Diskarmor in my hads again. The feeling is incredible. Once again I am called upon to destroy the evil centipede like creatures who will roll at me. Rygar has returned.
As a huge fan of the original arcade version, I had reservations for this game. Could Tecmo take a 2D side scrolling adventure game and transform it into a worthwhile 3D game? Could a 3D rygar still feel as nice as the original 2D arcade version? Luckily, the answer is yes....or at least mostly yes for both of these.
The game is simply gorgeous. I applaud Tecmo for their use of the PS2 hardware in this game. The opening cinema is on par with those brought to us by Capcom and Square; while the in game cut scenes aren't quite as nice, they still look good. Lighting effects are something that I am quite surprised to see in such abundance in this game, and especially used to such a nice degree.
Sounds are good, mostly, although the voice acting could use some work.
The 3D gameplay does work....but the use of Resident Evil style cameras makes it a bit hard in some places, especially when you move during a fight and the entire camera angle changes. The Diskarmor upgrades really add to the game, and each one has its own power to it. The other abilities you have, like hooking enemies and swinging them, give players a real nice sense of action in the game.
I like what has come out in this game. The dificulty is a bit steep in some places, but overall the game really shines as an example of how a game should be remade.
