This game is perfect.
Even though initially I was a bit overwhelmed and confused by the news messages clogging up my screen. Once I figured out how to configure the game appropriatelly ie. speed and news flow, I still did not really know what I was supposed to do. The manual is good but explains only a small part of the game. A lot of the rules are hidden. Nevertheless after having shrunk France to the size of switzerland, I restarted. I chose a land based country ie. Austria and started to understand how to play this game. I am now addicted. The amazing thing about this game is that playing each country makes you understand why history developped the way it did. The geopolitical structure of your starting country often makes you understand why that country developped the way it did. As Austria, I had to accept the creation of Hungary because I was tired of the rebellions. I was constantly in conflict with the northen Italian states and was attacked by the fast moving Ottoman empire. All these Events do not seem scripted and the AI is challenging. During an average turn you deal with trading, diplomacy, infrastructure improvements, possibly organise inquisitions or fight for the survival of your country. A great game.. I can't wait to play China, Japan, Finnland or Switzerland knowing that they will all play differently.
PS: Dangerously addictive and in addition, you learn something.
