well, as most people here know me, i am a big surfer...surfing as much as i can....i am also a surfing game monger...meaning i jump on every surfing game i can find
so after a tough time of searching through numerous chains, i finally found this game for the gamecube...let me say, i was rather impressed right off the back
the graphics are great, each wave flows, and the surfers body reacts well with it and is smoothly animated...the backgrounds are kinda blah and the FMV is horrible compressed making gorgeous surf footage look like garbage
the music is decent..i enjoy it much more than the soundtrack from any of the tony hawks becuase it really doesnt get old...with tribal beats and smooth jazzy sounds, it really just seems relaxing...the voices and wave sounds are well, decent but not anything to praise
now where it got good was in the control! its so hard to make a good controlling surfing game, expecially one thats fun. this one is dead on...you want to turn the surfer hard, push down on the button and swing him around with the control stick....it plays out smooth and they do exactly what you want them to do
the gameplay is excellent...i had a lot of fun trying to complete the goals to unlock more surf spots around the globe, and surfing each type of wave presents new challenges and a new type of style to learn. if you arent a surfer, you probably wouldnt enjoy this as much as i do though. i enjoy just carving up and down the wave, hitting the lip and watching it spray then doing a hard cutback into a 10 second long barrel, then pulling out and doing it again....its just the pure enjoyment of surfing that keeps me coming back to this game...sure the kickflips and grabs are fun, but i would much rather just carve around the wave all day rather than sitting trying to do all sorts of tricks
so, if you are a surfer or looking for a fun surfing game, pick this one up, but if you arent a surfer, try renting it first, as you might be dissapointed in the "eXXtremeness" of this title
