Final Fantasy IX was an excellent game with an excellent story, but unfortunately it also offers the least amount of original new material to the series, which especially holds true if you've played Final Fantasy IV or VI. I think it was done for the purpose of having Square deal with the so-called "purists" who swore that an "old school" Nintendo-style FF game can't be done on the Playstation.
