Metroid Prime is a major departure from the classic 2D side scrolling Metroid games, but manages to remain very true to the series and franchise. Many, including myself, were skeptical in regard to the direction the series was taking and wondered if a 3D Metroid game could work. Thankfully, we were all proven wrong.
The presentation is far beyond any game currently available. The visuals are the sweetest of any console game and the sound helps create the undeniably creepy mature atmosphere. It has amazing eye candy coupled with crisp sounds that are appropriate to this type of game.
The game suffers slightly in the control department. I wish a way to customize the control scheme was present, and any veteran of the first person genre will need a few minutes to adjust to the slightly awkward control scheme. Those who take the time to adjust soon learn that the control scheme actually enhances the entire experience of the game.
The mind-blowing visuals and audio are top notch, as good as anything available in the console market. Amazingly, this is not where this game shines. The gameplay is phenomenal. Nintendo was able to recreate the feel of the original Metroids in the third person. Just about all of Samus' tricks are here, this time in beautiful 3D. In all honesty I could not come up with a bad point about the gameplay and presentation. This is my pick for 2002 Game of the Year, edging out Splinter Cell, GTA: VC, Mario, FFX and Animal Crossing.
