Advance Wars accomplishes a feat that most games only dream of. It is very easy to pick up, addictive and remains very deep and challenging. Most console strategy titles could learn a great deal from the punch this little cart has.
The graphics are adequate and serve their purpose well. Additional art work, and the different battle clips are very well executed, and add to the overall appeal of this title.
The sound is excellent for a GBA game. The music works well, and the sound effects are typical for a strategy game.
The gameplay is where this game is head and shoulders above the rest of the GBA pack. The control is a shining example of how a game of this genre should handle. They are spot-on to say the least, and easy to pick up. Some of the scenarios themselves are extremely well designed and complicated, but the game eases you into them. Despite being easy to learn, the game is difficult to master. You can not go into battle head first, it is a necessity to plan out your attacks, when to defend, what areas of the map to occupy, etc.
I have put more hours into Advance Wars than all of my other GBA titles combined. The replay value is astounding; battling against an opponent via the link cables is truly wonderful, and a plethora of extras are incorporated into this brilliant title.
