I might come off like a Sega fanboy, but Shenmue is simply the greatest game ever. I don't know where to start. The story is deep. I mean like X-files deep. Well maybe not that deep but it is up there. There are few cut scenes in this game, but the way that the game is set up there is really no need for them.
Shenmue is a game like no other. First it is a mix of generes. Part RPG, Racer, Action/Adventure, Life Sim and fighter. While Shenmue doesn't excel in anyone area, where it does excel is how seamless they all work together. Also, Sega has made those annoying Quick Time Events fun. In Shenmue they actually have a purpose like if you are in a foot chase or a fight.
Sega has also thrown in everything this game. There is little that can't be done in this game. Go play in the arcade, practice your moves in the Dojo, collect lil trinkets, listen to Ryo's music collection, make friends and enemies. Time passes by steadly.
The progresses in a very linear fashion and it is pretty hard to get stuck in a certain place. Also there are numerous ways to get to the same point in the game. If you miss a contact or a clue, another contact or clue will come along.
In a nutshell, Shenmue is a very rewarding game espcially the final scene. And it sets up the sequal without leaving any questions unanswered. Well the questions that remain unanswered are the ones that are needed for the sequal. Enough of you reading this, go out and buy the game.
