I suppose I am some sort of console heathen. I found Cloud to be an irritating jerk, and when the big revalations came, I was unmoved. He was a poor excuse for a driving character, set against a backdrop of weak graphics and poor writing. The story was mediocre and the system was a mess, further catering to the destruction of class specificity first begun in Final Fantasy V and made complete in Final Fantasy VI. Since everyone can do anything, characters identities become wholly constituted by what they say and do in the story, but when your story is as poorly executed as in this game, everything becomes muddled. At the time, the blocky characters were annoying but considered state of the art. Even then the shift from FMV to 3D interaction was jarring. Now it's obscenely obvious. I didn't enjoy the game much when I first played it. Now, with four years of retrospect, (I last played it in August 2001) it's hard for me to conceive of why anyone ever enjoyed this game. It weakens my faith in humanity when I think of the dedication and bloodlust people have regarding Sephiroth and Cloud. At least the soundtrack is cool.
