The best way to describe Mafia is to say that it is a mix between Grand Theft Auto III and Max Payne. But whereas Grand Theft Auto III was more about running around and promoting chaos, Mafia is similar to Max Payne in the fact that it has a story to follow throughout the game. The cool thing about it is you also, like GTA3, have a whole living, breathing city to explore. Mafia really captures the feel of the 1930's perfectly. The cars and buildings have this authentic old timey look to them and the music even fits the time period.
Mafia's story itself is amazing. You start as a lowly cab driver and one day find yourself in the middle of a criminal world. At first, you perform small jobs for your boss such as blowing up a few cars but as the don sees what you are capable of, you begin to hang with the big boys completing tasks that are vital to the family.
Mafia really sets the stage and doesn't hold back throughout the game. The game is rather long and should at least take you around 20-25 hours to complete if not more. You won't get tired of it though. There is so much variety in the missions that the task you are required to complete could be trying to get 1st place in a race one day and blowing up buildings and breaking into cars the next. Mafia is an amazing achievement that lives up to all of the hype. The game is probably the most enjoyable 3rd person story driven game that I've played in a quite a while.
