D2, to me is an example of an "oh what could have been" kind of a game. I think Kenji Eno was on the right track with the story and style of the game he wanted to put out there... but it just all went horribly wrong when it came time to to actually put the game together.
For instance the combat system sucked, to put it mildly. I continuously got my butt kicked by monsters sneaking up behind me while I fought a monster directly in front of me because that is all I could see in first person mode. I mean why the heck would you switch me to first person view anyway? Switching from the third to first person view just kind of throws off the whole flow of the game for me.
And, speaking of "throwing off the flow", if you want to play this game you better be ready to be interrupted by cutscene after cutscene after cutscene. What makes it worse is that the graphics are not even taking full advantage of the dreamcast hardware thereby making it even more difficult to watch the all the cutscenes!
Anyway, I could not even bring myself to finish playing this game and traded it in about a week later. Who knows... maybe it would have gotten better as play went on but the point of a game is to keep you entertained and engrossed... and this game lost me way too early.
