This game is a major breakthrough for nintendo. In almost every way it beats Resident Evil. The camera angles, innovation, and amazing sanity effects that still suprise me make this game a lot of fun. The combat is much better than resident evil in that you are able to target enemy body parts. Also, using the different sword weapons are more fun than the actual guns. I can't stand the way resident evil characters wield knives. After an enemy goes down, you can finish him off with a final stab or shot.
Not only does Silicon Knights get the combat right, but the magick system is also right on. They introduce it to you slowly so as not to confuse, but eventually it gets complex. I am now summoning trappers and zombies that I get to control. The magick is really important for strategy and survival. Some of the other reviews posted here are premature. This game gets better as you go.
I won't give away many of the sanity effects, but trust me, they catch you off guard. The volume on my tv was turned down suddenly. I thought I had sat on the remote. Turns out I was going insane! I walked into a room once only to find myself sinking in quicksand! These aren't even the best ones, so watch out, you won't know what is real and what is insanity.
Twelve players are playable. I have played as six. They all feel different and wield different weapons. My favorite is the two-sword wielding Karim. Man that was fun.
The innovation in this game is awesome. The graphics may not beat Resident Evil, but I appreciate them more. Fixed camera angles should be a thing of the past. Pre-rendered backgrounds make Resident Evil look so good. I will give Resident Evil the advantage in character models however. Eternal Darkness features swooping cameras that never hinder the action. Because Silicon Knights went that direction, there is no way they could beat Resident Evil in the beauty factor. It does do well enough though.
