On a console full of FPS titles, it is somewhat risky to release on into the wild. The wild being, the Xbox. Those selling run the risk of getting compared to Halo and Halo 2. Area 51 does not stand up to either. Area 51 is on par with Unreal Championship (before the kung-fu film makeover). The difference is that Area 51 has a worthwhile single player component. You play the role of an officer of sorts. You are sent into the Area 51 facility and all hell breaks loose. In the fight for your life, you become an altered mutant-being due to infection. Then a few twists and turns lead you to climax after climax after climax after climax, which hardly can be considered climaxes due to lackluster pacing. To say Area 51 is a bad shooter is to be wrong. To say it is anything more than a decent/good shooter is to be wrong also. It is one of the many shooters stuck in the tank of mediocrity. Its online mode does not help all that much either. While fun for cheap thrills, you will instantly master it. There is not one game I entered that I did not end up as leader. There is little strategy and Area 51 online becomes a constant fragfest. Fun, but only entertaining for short amounts of time.
Other than the blandness of the title, there is not much else wrong with it. The controls are on par, the graphics are in between good and great, and the game itself contains much fun. Area 51 is a rental at best, even with its extras, there is little content to warrant purchase.
