One statement that always baffled me was when gamers would come to us and complain, "There are just too many good RPGs out there!" Sure, maybe we are too much like your crazy aunt Ethyl who lived through the depression and still saves all of her twisty ties from her loaves of bread.  But I struggled through the horrible RPG droughts of the past.  I know what it is like to go years without a respectable RPG.  This is the feast I always dreamed of!  So, this complaint didn't hold much weight with us…until recently.
Sony chose to pick up one of the premier RPGs for release in the United States, Game Arts' "Grandia" for the PSOne.  As one of the most celebrated Saturn titles, its conversation to the PSOne and much anticipated release caused quite a fervor among gamers familiar with the import version.
Well, we don't know if it was the cluster of other Role Playing Games available at the time or a possible backfiring of the Austin Powers parody ad (If you only buy one RPG this year, buy Final Fantasy VIII.  If you buy two, buy Grandia) but Grandia did not charge to the top of the sales charts.  As a matter of fact, so players still have never heard of Grandia, one of the top ten sword and sorcery adventures of all time.
Maybe the fault lies with the slow start that Grandia ails from.  The introduction quest sends the characters searching for the "Legendary Armor", which turns out just to be a pile of garbage.  Not this most auspicious of beginnings.  However, once the story begins picking up speed, it never slows down.  And the ride is everything you could ever imagine, clocking in at over 60 hours of playtime.
