A quest of epic proportions. A mission that could take years to complete. Is this a new game? No, it is the task that every Dreamcast RPG fan has been undertaking, trying to find a defining RPG for the DC. Unfortunately, gamers will not find Silver a fitting end of this hunt.
Silver is a port of title that was trying to emulate the console RPG on the PC. As you can imagine, the ironic full-circle this title has taken has its causalities.
Console titles have always focused more on storytelling that convoluted combat systems. Silver's attempt to carry this off somehow ended up with weak storytelling accented by a bad flowing plot and a severe case of "What am I supposed to do next?" syndrome.
The combat system is anything but convoluted. Co-adventurers are controlled by the computer and suffer from a weak A.I., never seeming to defend or attack at the correct times. Luckily, you can, and should, assume control of them. The combat ends up with the player picking an enemy and resorting to some severe button mashing. Leveling up a character is impossible as the adventurers only raise levels at predetermined times, usually right after a boss-battle.
Camera Problems and Slowdown round out the marks against Silver. The pluses include crisp character graphics and nicely rendered backgrounds with "hot-spots" (switches, doors, Etc.) that can be pointed out by using the L button.
Silver is not a bad game, it is merely formulistic and unimaginative. Recommended only for the RPG famished.
