Progressing a series with its first sequel is quite a challenge. What should be changed and what should be kept? There is a big difference between making the leap to the next level or simply stumbling. Evolution 2 falls somewhere in-between by fixing some flaws found in the first game and adding new systems and much needed gameplay hours.
The core of Evolution 2 has remained close to its ancestor. The combat system and overall look were some of the strengths of the first game and have wisely been carried over to Evolution 2.
Some of the advancements include cleaner, higher resolution graphics, a mixture of random and preset dungeons, and a much-needed additional camera mode. Adding the predefined dungeons is a godsend, as it eliminates the sentiment that you are simply fighting to reach a certain floor and replaces it with a feeling you are actually searching for an artifact or a boss.
Evolution 2 has also added voices for all the characters and Ubi Soft has chosen to keep them in their original Japanese form while adding English subtitles. It is hard to fault Ubi Soft for this decision since the voices match the characters so perfectly.
If you enjoyed the first Evolution, do not hesitate to pick up Evolution 2. And with the additional advancements found in Evolution 2, it should even convert some of its earlier critics.
