If the constant comparisons between Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy are any indication, Torneko: The Last Hope and Chocobo Dungeon will certainly be mentioned in the same breath.
Both feature randomized dungeons and signature characters from their respective series. Each one also takes a lighthearted approach and uses a simple move and attack system. The amount of similarities goes on, so much so that if you liked Chocobo Dungeon, we strongly recommend you pick up Torneko.
The main character Torneko (named Taloon in Dragon Warrior 4) is the rotund hero and looks amazing in this sprite based RPG. The amount of detail the can now be produced on the latest systems almost makes us regret the coming of the 3-D RPG. The music is also fantastic, assisting in setting the mood perfectly.
The gameplay of Torneko is mind-bogglingly simple, yet strangely addictive. Much like playing hours of Pac-man, the challenge is always the same but it never seems to get old.
Most of the traits that we have always found annoying with dungeon crawl's like Torneko are present, such as being reset to level one at the end of each level, only being able to truly save when outside of a dungeon, and the fact that most battles are a war of attrition. But somehow Torneko holds everything together and makes it enjoyable.
Torneko certainly isn't for everyone, but its simple gameplay makes it a great choice for a first time RPG player or someone tired of navigating convoluted menus just to do a little adventuring.
