I believe! Yep, PaRappa's constant repeating of his mantra "I gotta believe!" has done more than convince me. PaRappa has done his best to elevate the short length problem with this first release and to incorporate the advancements of UmJammer Lammy into this release.
PaRappa's leap to the PS2 is really more of a hop. The graphics still have the pancake look that we wouldn't change for anything. The look is cleaner and more vibrant but still fundamentally the same. The biggest improvement since PaRappa 1 is the new multi-player aspect. Players can now take on a friend or an AI opponent in a "I can freestyle better than you" competition. The computer AI isn't much of a challenge but other humans (especially those of the female variety who are ALWAYS better than us at music games) make for very intense challenges.
If you have played other PaRappa releases, you will breeze right through the first portion of the game in about two hours. This is more of a "easy" version that allows you to get your groove on before kicking the difficulty up to a real challenge. This lets first time players and younger gamers a chance to play the "real" game without getting bounced out by a rapidly rising difficulty level (one of UmJammer Lammy's faults). Each successful completion of the game unlocks a new hat color for PaRappa and boosts up the difficulty level, adding new words, riffs and button presses. Finish the game a couple of times and you can unlock the record shop and listen to all of the games music.
The music in PaRappa 2 is excellent but, as always, there just isn't enough of it to satisfy our furious appetite for addictive candy sweet rap. We feel inclined to say that their isn't quite enough to PaRappa The Rapper 2, but we can't. I'm still playing it and still enjoying it weeks after buying it. It's just that it is so fun, I'm always wanting a little bit more.
