I've always had a soft spot for Spyro, the little flame-breathing dragon. This is one reason why I was happy to see that Universal Interactive didn't restrict our fine flying fiend to a 2-D environment in this release but, instead, opted to use an isometric view with splashes of behind-the-dragon views thrown in for the bonus levels.
Distressingly, much of the game is like a badly planned game of scavenger hunt where someone forgot to print a map. I've played plenty of games that could be broken down to their lowest common dominator and be called scavenger hunts and it's not necessarily a bad thing. The problem with Season of Ice is that it doesn't have the afore mentioned map. Most of the game is spent racing over beautiful landscapes looking for a fairy or a treasure…and the re-racing over those beautiful landscapes to trip to find a fairy you missed…and then slowly scouring over the landscape (yea, yea, it's beautiful) trying to find that one lousy, good-for-nothing fairy who you swear is hiding from you.
When you are not retracing your steps looking for an item you missed, you have having fun battling bosses, lighting things on fire, and gliding to perilous ledges. With a better use of the "look" button (such as making the screen scrolling function a tad more useful) and a simple map to tell you where you have and have not been, this title could have went from being a good game to an excellent one.
