Digimon World is based on the hit animated series now being shown worldwide. It is part monster breeder and part RPG. Regrettably, it fails to perform well in either category and ends up providing a very mediocre gaming experience.
The story of Digimon World starts with the lead character being sucked into a Digimon keychain. Inside, he finds a world where are the Digimon are real. He is given the quest to return all of the lost Digimon to File City.
The quest begins with one Digimon under the player's control. Actually, saying that he is under control is an overstatement. The player can give the Digimon commands but the combat is played out in a computer vs. computer battle. With very little interaction on the gamer's part, these battles both take too long and fail to create any real excitement.
Initially, the starting Digimon are extremely weak. This makes adventuring far from File City impossible. Returning to File City for a quick recharge becomes commonplace as does running around waiting for the Digimon to tire so he can regain some health by sleeping. The dialogue within Digimon World feels forced and just trying to decipher where to adventure next is a real chore.
The story and monster breeding aspects really kick in once you have put a half dozen or so hours into the game. Sadly, I don't think many gamers will make it that far.
Fans of the animated series may be willing to endure the slow start and clunky combat of Digimon World to raise and fight the famous monsters, but many gamers will find it tiresome.
