Counterstrike has been the king of multiplayer FPS for since the day it was released. No other game came close such as Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Medal of Honor, etc. Battlefield 1942 is a close 2nd to counterstrike until further improvements/patches will be released. The graphics are good but not groundbreaking. The sound also is not that great. It seems the graphics and sound of counterstrike are better than Battlefield 1942. The thing that makes this game great is that you get to go on foot or ride on a variety of vehicles such as airplanes, tanks, battleships, etc. The maps are also huge and have a lot of variety. Some maps bring you to beaches, some at bombed cities. This also represents different times during the war. You want to know what it was like during the war of US and Japan, load the Iwo Jima map. Want to be Vassili, just load the map of stalingrad and choose the scout/sniper class. There are a lot of classes such as engineers, medics, assualt, and anti tank and each plays an important role in the game. Another thing that makes this game great is that you can go out on your own and do whatever you want or you can team up with others and make a strategic plan in order to defeat the enemy. This is just like counterstrike, thus it makes the game enjoyable. Other games concentrate on teamwork, thus you can't complete the game if you go out on your own. This aspect for some makes the game not as enjoyable as counterstrike or battlefield 1942. The controls are simple, using the same control schemes as counterstrike. You can also control the vehicles with the same controls as when you are on foot. One problem with the controls is the handling of the planes. It is extrememly hard to fly these machines, so expect a lot of crashes when you first start flying. With practice you will eventually control these planes with ease.
The game is not that stable as counterstrike. I get to experience a lot of crashes, especially when the video and sound settings are put to medium and above. This is on an athlon XP 1600 with 256 MB ram and a Geforce 4 64 MB video card. At the lowest setting, the crashes are solved, but the game doesn't run as fluidly as counterstrike.
In summary, the innovation in the game is the ability to control different vehicles with simple controls. The maps have different varieties and are quite large. Yhe game comes a close second to counterstrike, but with a little more patches, this game could be as great as the former game.
