Right now, there are no other RPG's out there but Breath of fire V: Dragon Quarter. This is a good diversion while waiting for upcoming RPG's going to be released this year such as Xenosaga and final fantasy X-2. The graphics of this game doesn't suit my taste. I rather like the graphics of FFX as compared to the now popular cel shaded games. Still, the graphics for the game are not bad, but there are better games graphically out there. The music is very good and is appropriate, depending on the situation, such as battles, sad cut scenes, etc. The sound effects does not equal the quality of the music. The story is what makes you play this game. In the game, people live deep, deep down under the earth and you are a ranger or police of this underground city. One day, in the line of duty, you get to meet a girl who is actually an experiment of the city. You get quite attached to this character and you discover that in order for her to live, she needs to get to the surface. Nobody knows if there is a surface or not, to them its just a myth. After going up several levels, you get a feeling of accomplishment since you can see your progression in the map. And you also wonder, if there is really a sky, or what it looks like, does it look like a wasteland or a lush paradise, or a big city with lots of people? In the end, it is very satisfying. The battle system resembles that of the fallout games, where you are given AP's or action points. Each time you move or execute an attack, a certain amount of AP will be used. The more AP you have the more powerful attacks and combos you can perform. The battle system is interesting and quite enjoyable. It is different as compared to the more traditional RPG's. The things that I didn't like about the game is that you are encouraged to repeat it from the start in order to get more of the story, since the first time around some cutscenes are hidden from you unless you restart the game by dying. You do the same thing all over again, same hallways, same enemies, and you get in return some extra cutscenes. The battle system is different from the traditional RPG, but I still like the FF style battle system. I finished the game in about 24 hours (with one restart), some reviews say that you can finish it under 10 hours. This game is quite short as compared to today's standards where RPG's are completed after more than 50 hours. In conclusion, this isn't a bad game, but it is not as good as FF.
