Ridge Racer V is a game that needs no introduction. If you have never heard of Ridge Racer, don't buy this game or even finish reading. However, for those of use that have, prepare for a fun joyride.
RRV is a good looking game. The jaggies are present and they are annoying, however upon further inspection, after a little time with the game, you will forget about them. The cars look awesome. You can see the break pads heat up ona massive power slide, the sparks flow from under the car, and even see the lights on the dashboard change color when you enter the tunnel and turn on the lights. The game is beautiful, with only a little slowdown.
The driving is dead-on for a RR game. The powersliding is the best of the series. The AI is not stupid, but they ain't too bright either. It's a fun race. There is only a limited amount of tracks which are all based around, over, under, and through Ridge City. Good variety in seeing the city from different POV's but horrible on the actual replay of the game.
The cars sound great. You can actually hear the cars get louder and softer depending on where you are on the track and how far away they are. The announcer would have been better if he had more lines. Hearing "that was tight" for the 100th time is kinda annoying, but he helps for the atmosphere. The music is also good, but can get annoying after several hours.
Overall the game is a solid first generation racer, but know in the lifetime of PS2, there are so many other choices I can't actually recommend buying this game now. However, if your a fan, you already have and don't have to worry about that.
