When I originally played Doom and Doom 2, I thought that they were the coolest thing ever. These games would scare me the %@$# out of me, simply because I would walk into a dark room and have monsters hiding that wanted nothing more than to shoot me, bite me, claw me, and generally cause my death. Skip forward to 2004. Games have a lot more expected out of them these days. Stories, much better graphics, much more compelling reasons to go forward in the game, more weapons, rag doll physics, toilets that work....etc. Doom 3 does a good job of delivering on most of these, and it captures part of what's been lost from the old days. It might seem kind of shallow, but I'll tell you that this game does the best job of keeping me on the edge of my seat than just about any other game from the last 10 years. It's very stressful for me to play it, and I like it! The funny thing is that I KNOW when I walk into a new room that there'll be monsters in there, and I have the firepower to take them out. I still get stressed. It's mad fun. Now for the negative, and there's not that much. it's dark. Too dark in my opinion. The whole "Rifles don't have a flashlight attached" thing makes the dark matter too much. I have the brightness on my monitor turned up all the way, and the brightness in the game turned up all the way, and it's still too dark almost all of the time. The original Dooms had large outdoor areas and really large rooms with many many enemies to kill. I haven't seen an area like that yet. It's too claustrophobic all of the time. Besides these things, it's a really fun game that is worth picking up....assuming you have the hardware to do it justice.
