Activision called it a GTA killer, well it's not exactly true but it's the nearest thing to GTA you can find. You take role of a cop who's lost his mother when he was young. Since then he was bought up in LA and his father is known as the best cop there. In a crime scene his father was killed and now Nickis seeking revenge. And the only way he can get a hold of these criminals is through the police so he joined them and became a cop. Before that he was highly trained in China for hand to hand combats and was ready enough. You start the game in a training center where you get an aiming lesson. Aiming is a bit annoying at the begining in the game but you get used to it soon enough. You'll continue the game whether you fail or pass the aiming mission, either cases are the same. Now that you got used to the firing system your second and final training mission before you get into the game is a driving one. You get in your car and must reach a certain location, you must pass this one in order to progress. After that you are a free cop, you can go seek criminals and rither kill them or hand cuff them (arrest them) and increase your reputation! Kill inocent people and become a bad cop! Explore the areas of LA! Whatever you want to do. The most enjoyment of GTA was exploring the places with no particular time or forced to do a mission, here is the same unique style. Your boss is a female character, and you have a female partner too. The game is rated 'M' for Mature not only for the blood it contains, but for the swearing and erotic scenes it has. Dance clubs, lingeries, bikini's etc. And Nick the LA cop and Chinese fighter won't kick a chance!
You'll go around most of the game exploring areas, arresting criminals stoping crimes and complete missions. And if Nick isn't a cool character enough then you can play by dozens others using cheats and by completing certain objectives. In the game you can do whatever you want, if you start killing inocent people you'll become a bad cop as your meter rises, by doing so you'll face some chases at the begining from cops but as you do more damage it can reach to SWAT Team chasing you around. The same can happen elsewhere as if you killed bad guys you'll get chased by bad guys at times.
Gameplay (8/10):
You move around using the analogue stick and use the D-pad for other side stuff like horns, puting the gun back etc. The game has most of what GTA has with better hand to hand combat system. You can punch, kick, block, do flying to ground moves. The camera may get annoying at times as you'll not see well if you suddenly turn. The aiming is a bit hit and miss but the auto lock is better than nothing. There is a cool manual targeting where you hold the R1 button and you'll see through a first person view, the time will be slow and it's good when you want to get a cool head shot or accuracy. When you need a car then just take anyone infront of your sight and Nick will be polite here unlike GTA games where the hero just fingers around. Many playable characters if you used codes.
Graphics (9/10):
Imagine the streets of LA in a video game! Well yeah the locations are detailed and the map is big. Great facial animations. The vehicles are well designed. Physics applied to cars and destructible objects like lamps and trees. The camera maybe annoying at times when you play as Nick (not driving) but that's not a big deal.
Sound (9/10):
Variety in music and many songs from hip hop to rock. Nick's voice is by a famous actor and the voice adting is overall great. The sound effects are cool, and the games sound engine feels like if you were watching a movie. Many comments by Nick and speeches, when you want to take someones car then he says police related. You have a radio where you get communicated by your boss telling you what to do next.
Life-Span (9/10):
Many missions and although not many unlockables, in fact you can unlock an extra character only while play by the rest using codes. Some extra side missions like arresting a criminal cna drop on you now and then, many missions to pass and the most impressive is the exploring feaature where you can spend daily hours just wondering around the town busting criminals or messing with the locals. Just learn the map and kill citizens! Believe me it's fun but I said learn the map first because the next thing you'll figure out is that a whole bunch of cops a SWAT teams are behind you!
Overall (90%):
Close to GTA, has some overhands, but not all. Activision was semi right when they said that it was a GTA killer but it's not completely correct. If we want to compare them then the graphics are better, more detailed vehicles in TC and some bullet time scenes. Many attempts has been made in such genre and similar games but why True Crimes stand is because of it's exploring feature where you can wonder around LA and stop crimes. You get to decide whether you want to be a good cop or a bad cop. By the way, there are even monsters in the game like zombies etc.
GTA vs True Crimes:
1- Graphics! In the graphics True Crimes is better here. Better animations and character blocks. Sharper and smoother. The vehicles and levels looks more detailed.
2- Fun! Fortunately True Crimes has an exploration feature and that made it a game really worth getting. GTA has that feature and it's difficult to choose but what adds to TC is that while you are exploring LA you can stop crimes, etc.
3- Personalities! GTA's hero is a thief and TC hero is a cop seeking revenge. It has a story so I prefer TC.
4- Playability! Thanks to the flaws in TC like the camera and annoying aiming GTA stands here as it have much more missions than TC.
Advice:
Did you like such games as GTA3, GTA: VC, The Gateway and Mafia? Well this is an unmissable title in the genre and you can explore LA now! It's another version of GTA for the PS2 and Xbox, it's GTA for the Cube.
Good Points:
1- Variety in music.
2- Explore (free roaming) LA and stop crimes.
3- Play as many characters including Snoop Dogg!
4- It has more of Holywood movie atmosphere than a video game but in a good way.
5- Impressive story and personalities.
Bad Points:
1- Weak aiming.
2- Messy camera.
3- MONSTERS IN THE GAME!!! What the hell!
