I personally found this game to be more enjoyable than its sequel, Diablo 2. There are a few reasons for this. First off, the originality. The weapon system was seriously an addiction in itself. The chance that you could get an incredible weapon every time you played the game was a big motivator. The claustrophobic randomly generated maps, in conjunction with the massive power that your character wields, especially by the end of the game, results in some intense bouts of severe destruction.
This game is really not much of an RPG, as your character basically is pigeonholed into one of three types, and that pigeonhole only has to do with the means as to which your character decimates everything around you. However, I had a blast doing it! While its not a revolutionary game, and its not a particularily thoughtful game, its a great game for the same reason that I believe the Quake games are worthy of praise. It has got a mass amount of adrenaline pumping, basically mindless action. And I loved it.
This isn't a game that I wanted to play more than once through, or online, even though I'm sure many many people spent days or even months playing tha game. The option to go on to harder difficulty settings is a good one, and I must admit that I did come back a couple months later and beat it on a harder difficulty setting. I haven't touched it since, however that hardly detracts from how much fun I had with it when I did play it.
