In my opinion Doom 3 disappointed. The game delivers too much in one area to the extent that it becomes one-dimensional; its gameplay becomes repetitive and dare I say - boring. Doom 1 and Doom 2 were delightful mixtures of different shooter experiences: run and gun, stealth, tactical, cover, open areas, claustrophobic rooms, various weapons, various enemies.
Doom 3 gets muddled in the survival horror/shooter genre. The game is good if you play it for 30 mins on a show floor or a demo disc. Beyond the first-impression solid experience Doom 3 just lacks the gameplay legs of its predecessors.
The game is visually superb, a technical jewel, but fun-wise it falls short. How many times can you switch between a flashlight and a shotgun while keeping it engaging?
I'm not going to bash on this reverend franchise any longer because i feel bad doing so, but it wasnt what i was hoping for at all.
