Other than slightly improved graphics engine plus a leaner new look of the main character Onimusha 2 is the same old affair as Onimusha was.  Therefore I will use the same review as the one I wrote for the original titles.

The gameplay in my opinion was extremely limited and extremely boring.  Onimusha 2 remains in effect not much more than a hack-em-slash-em type of title.  I know that this genre is revered in Japan but it's something I don't enjoy playing (you'll see my similarly low scores for the Dynasty Warriors franchise) at all.  The gist of the storyline is the adventure of a Japanese warlord who is avenging the death of his family.  There is nothing more to it really.  The cut scenes are pieces together rather clumsily and feel like portion of a bad Japanese anime.

The gameplay is decidedly mediocre, if you can button-mash you will do well in this action game.  There's pretty much the button to slash and the left stick to move and that is it.  The AI throws a mind-boggling number of enemies at you (in typical Japanese fashion) and they are all mind-bogglingly dumb.  You can literally go thru the levels of Onimusha 2 with your eyes closed.  As long as you are pounding on the A button, all surrounding enemies will perish.

The mechanics of the game are solid – the third person view feels ideal for this type of content.  The environments are lush and the camera control is tolerable.  The graphics are probably the best asset of this franchise and the sounds are neat too (you'll feel like you in a Japanese workout gym – there's that much grunting that goes together with all the slashing).

Net net, I expected much stronger gameplay from a franchise that shares an engine with titans like Resident Evil and Devil May Cry.  I was taken aback by how shallow Onimusha 2 is – rent this game, don't buy it.
