Have you ever had a feeling that before a game came out, you knew it was going to be one of the greatest ever? Wind Waker is the single best next-gen game released. Nothing can touch the sheer genious Nintendo expertly crafted into their latest masterpeice. Not Metroid Prime, Not GTA: Vice City, Not Halo, nothing. It's just that amazing.
For anyone who despises Miyamota's choice to make the game look like a cartoon, I have a little something to tell you. I was once a bonafide cel-hater. I despised them because of the way it put WW's image: a mindless children's game. When I finally booted the game up, the graphics sorta disappeared. Everything moves so fluently, you don't even realize that it's a video game. It really sucks you in and makes you feel like you are a part of the game.
And then there is the sound. At first, it sounds Irish, and that Nintendo has taken the green a bit to literally. But later islands make you felly giddy inside. The sound is, again, the best on any system. Everything is gorgeous, from the Chrono-Cross like music to the sound of landing a blow on an enemy. You'll weep over this game, and the inferiority of other games will start to show all because of the game's sound of a pig's snort.
But what good is presentation if the gameplay itself is a stinker? No good, but no worries here, since Gameplay has but one minor flaw. Sailing every will get boring fast. But since there are dozens of islands to visit, getting from one place to another will be prolonged since you wish to discover all the little side quests imaginable. Controls are a bit awkward when you have to push a crate, but it doesn't get in the way to much. Other than that, perfection awaits. The battles have never been this fun. Every Enemy has a weakness, but some are more hidden than others. Bosses are pefectly balanced in terms of difficulty. Playing the game is like heaven, nothing but happiness.
The story is a bit of a diversion. You don't actually play as THE Link. Instead you play as a boy who lives on an island where every boy dresses as Link at age 12 to show that they have become an adult. You are saving your sister this time around, not Zelda. And you have a home, maybe two if you do a certain side quest. And those pirates you meet in the beginning, ecspecially Tetra, will be important about half-way through the game. Other than a Final Fantasy game, you have the best stort written in this game.
In other words, if you own a Gamecube, buy this game. If you don't own a Gamecube, buy one.
