Note: I am reviewing the Game as played on Hard Mode.
I haven't played Final Fantasy (the original) in 9 years. This compilation disc was like a gift from God. Both Games are perfectly emulated, which means short load times, no choppyness, and no shortage of anything good. In fact, the music has been bumped up to CD quality and makes the overall package more enjoyable.
Final Fantasy is unlike any RPG you'll see released today. Not only is the game insanely difficult (which is a good thing in my point of view), but also packs an interesting way of using magic. Instead of having one set MP, you have different levels of magic that use their level-specific MP. And since each spell takes up just 1 MP, you'll have little to worry about. To make players feel more into the game, you pick which charectors to use. Some are better than others in terms of strength, but have little magic power. You choose your team depending on your likings. This game is not without faults, however. You will spend a lot of time leveling up. And it can be a pain having to visit the Inn and Sancutuary too often. Plus, the storyline is pretty much non exsistent. But It is still an Enjoyable game.
Final Fantasy II has one of the most interesting and addictive leveling up system. No experience is involved. You gain attributes by participating in combat. It's simpler and I think it's personally better than the whole experience system. The battle system is similar to the PSX Final Fantasies, just without the ATB. It's more just random turn-based. But it doesn't hurt the experience. The story line is much better. The only people who would have regretted buying the game are those who are to picky with their graphics. Every one else will think of it as Nostalgia Express.
