You'd think that since ROTK is a licensed game, it would be most likely a nominee for worst game of the year. Fortunately, it breaks away from tradition and follows in the path of the movies as pure greatness. Nothing in the game fails to impress, and even though I say that a lot, I really truly mean it this time.
So you're probably thinking "What is so great about Return of the King anyways?" Well, for one, the Combo System is simple, but it amazingly works out just fine. Timing and memorization is the key. And each combo has it's strengths and weaknesses. While some may be slow, yet powerful, others might only do great damage to orcs, yet leave other enemies with barely a scratch. It really makes you think. But think quick! Because the orcs are always ready to make your day a rough one.
And rough it will be. No matter how experienced you are with Hack n' Slashers, this game will give you a nice rounded beating. It's nothing to moan about, but you eventually learn tactics to take out the enemy while causing as little damage possible to you. Even then, however, it won't be an easy romp. It's not that it's cheap (in fact, the enemy is smart and doesn't get on your nerves) but they have their own strategies.
Technically, it follows the movies standards as being the best possible. Everything is vividly clear and realistically dark. The world around you will look, sound, and feel beautiful. EA sure knows how to make a game feel great before even playing it.
All in all, ROTK is an outstanding game. Any fan of LOTR (or video games for that matter) should seriously consider renting (if not buying) it.
