Nintendo's first Mario Kart game still remains it's best. The level design is spectacular for being a 2D course. This is the game that started a mega popular franchise. And it deserves to be recognized.
In true Mario Fashion, the graphics are bright and vivid. Everything is easy to see and distinguish from the rest. While the graphics aren't the best, that doesn't mean they aren't good. Some jagginess is noticleable, escpecially on the item pick-up squares. But it doesn't affect the superb gameplay at all.
The sound are as good as they can get on the SNES. The music isn't bad, but the sounds and the clearity of them is well transmitted. The only annoying noise you'll come across is the sound of the fishing boo picking you up when you fall off the course.
The level design, as stated above, is amazing. Every circuit is bound to have a secret path and cleverly placed obstacles. The game also makes you work for those secret paths, as they are often out of sight or on dangerous catwalks. It gives you the question "Should I risk falling off the edge while attempting to jump across or should I play it safe and go around?" A question you must answer quickly, or you'll wind up falling off an edge unintentionally.
Although the fun is limited in the single player mode, with 2 players, you'll never be the least bit bored. The battle mode ensures that the good times will last as you attempt to beat the living snot out of each other. Although some problems arise, such as the omission of certain weapons, it won't leave you in harms way as you are always striving to come up with new strategies to defeat your opponent.
As far as racing games go, you will find better graphics and more options in todays current games. But for sheer fun, the crown goes to Super Mario Kart. No racer game has held me this hooked this long. Another must-own for your SNES collection.
