Evolution is a great little RPG. It doesn't do everything right, but what it does, it does well. Not a bad start to Dreamcast RPG gaming.
Evolution is very small in overall scope. You have only one town to visit during the course of the game, every dungeon is random, and all the characters are named after weaponry. It's really very odd...but executed fairly well.
The battle system is as straight forward as you can get. Choose actions for each character, that character does that, repeat. Something a little interesting in the battles is the ability to reposition your characters in what is basically a 3X3 grid. Each character can move backwards one space, or forwards one space. Basically it gives them 3 spaces of movement. Granted, this doesn't add the biggest thrill to battle, but at least it mixes things up a little.
I liked the innocence of the characters in evolution. They just seemed like they were always in high spirits, and there was something edearing about them...i could never put my finger on it though...
All in all, Evolution is a nice diversion for dreamcast owners. It's no Grandia 2 or Skies of Arcadia, but it's a great way to kill some time. Go pick this game up for cheap, and give it a spin!
