Having played the first Onimusha, and enjoying it immensely, I was very much looking forward to playing Onimusha 2. Thankfully it lived up to expecations, because it was the first PS2 game I have acyually bought (I normally rent games). As far as comparisons with the original game go, the sequal is far deeper and much more enjoyable than the first. Tha graphics are far superior, though that may seem impossible after the first Onimusha. The CG cutscenes are unbelievable, the best I have ever seen in a computer game. The backgrounds are very well done, though they still seem to be just backgrounds, and not living parts of the world, though they are still more interactive in many ways than the previous game. The sound is wonderful, with brilliant battle effects and the music is much more effective than the previous title - I barely noticed it this time, but I know it was there. The voice acting is one complaint though, it is absolutely terrible. The main characters voice is way too dramatic and unnatural, and similar complaints can be made about all the characters, except for perhaps the ninja character. As far as plot goes, it is much deeper than Onimusha 1. Character interaction becomes much more important with a 'gift' system which enables you to 'buy' help from other characters in boss battles and other difficult areas. However, it does seem a bit difficult to figure who wants what, and it is rather cliched that the female character is only interested in hair accessories and pretty scarves. It is much harder to upgrade armour and weapons this time, with many more souls needed to move weapons, and especially armour, from level 1 to level 2. I did complain that this was too easy in the first game, so I guess I should be happy. All in all, this is a fantastic game that I think any fan of Japanese cinema and history should own.
