SURVIVAL HORROR NIRVANA !!

Its amazing - life i mean!  One minute you think you will never even own a video game console - the next thing you know 3 great ones come along at the same time and you want all of them!!  ;O)

I was just thinking how bad i thought the older games and consoles were.  The PSX finally changed all that though.  And for me it was RESIDENT EVIL on the PSX that finally pulled me into the world of the video gamer.  I had no idea that a video game could be so multi-faceted.  It was challenging, scary, engrossing, fun (and in some places very funny - voice actors please take note!!)
Although it was a hard game
(especially for a beginner) it just got better and better.  The more you played it - the more it rewarded you.

After this experience I was hooked - and I waited eagerly to play each RE instalment.  I even got a Dreamcast for a short period so i could play Code Veronica!
Of course it was Code Veronica that gave a hint of the new graphical power that the new consoles would give next generation games and the RE series was no exception!!

Pretty as Code Veronica was - It pales into insignificance next to RE ZERO though.  (Im getting to the point - honest - stick with me!!)

I live in London (England) and have bought a US Game Cube so that I could play ZERO now ( then I dont have to wait the extra 6 months for the UK version to hit these shores).

Im so glad I did.  'Zero' is the height of Survival Horror NIRVANA.  It takes the genre to new heights.  Its a joy to play.  The graphics are so good that at times it looks like they were shot /painted by one of the great Gothic artists rather than pre-rendered by the genius's at Capcom.
For instance the scene where you approach the Church (with the bats flying around ootside) is just...well...beautiful to behold....

(told you i would get to the point eventually ) :O)

Gameplay has lept forward too.  The new 'Partner Zapping' becomes second nature very quickly.  The lack of item boxes means no more running backwards and forwards to save rooms (or using herbs just to clear a space in your inventory!!)
The new character (Billy) is cool enough and Rebecca is just toooooo cute - especially in her Leather Outfit ;O) ( i know - i need help !).
The voice acting is much better now - although i rather miss having a giggle at the script now and again!!

Sound is often over-looked in reviews but Capcom knew early on that in many ways its the Music Score and Sound FX that really scares the player (as is true for most Horror Films) - and they are masters at it!  You will feel your skin crawl!!

The game seems alot easier than REmake though.  It must be the fact that with 2 characters on screen for most of the game you have twice the fire power (and twice the inventory spaces) because the undead/combat are no easier to deal with.  In fact the new 'Leech Zombie' will scare the CR*P out of you.  Avoid it at all costs - especially if you only have the pistol !!

Problems? Well....Its not as scary as Remake - or as hardcore - and its too short of course.  A common problem with the series.  If you dont use a guide it may take anything between 20 and 50hrs depending on how 'hardcore' you are.
Also - I WILL NOT moan about the controls like most seem to on here.  I think they are supposed to be like that !!....  ie a' little tricky' so you are always slightly unsure about your escape and therefor on edge.  (and you will be on edge!!) ;O)

All-in-all RE Zero is a great game.  It should be played and enjoyed by anyone with an ounce of good taste who demands an intelligent, thrilling, fun, gore packed adventure.  Thanx Capcom.  you ROCK !!  (cheque to usual address please ) ;O)

Bring on Resi 4 and Biohazard Online !!
