Cute. Thats a word that sums up this game very well.
The graphics are cute.
The characters in it are cute.
The gameplay is...erm...well its cute too !!
Maybe a bit too 'young' and 'cartoony' for me personally (i'm old u see...lol) - but thats not to criticize the game at all.
Basically the story revolves around the main character Jade and her planet (Hyllis) that has been invaded by a nasty alien race and its your job as a member of the 'underground' resistance network to un-cover the conspiracy that inevitably rears its ugly head throughout the game.
I can see why lots of game players out there love the fact that - for the most part - you only have a big stick and a camera as you main 'weapons' during gameplay.
Very refreshing this - especially in a world of mindless gaming violence and dull 'grab the Rocket Launcher at the first opportunity' style gameplay most seem to favour these days. (Yawn !)
As good as all of this is - 'Platform' games on the whole aren't my thing you see - but if they are your thing then this game should be high on your shopping list - as should Prince of Persia - both made by Ubi-Soft - who seem to be on a role these days !
Gameplay wise the third person 'widescreen' style works on the whole - althought the 'camera' system can be problematic at crucial 'platforming' moments - which is a bit dissapointing.
The combat has good and bad points too - the fact that your 'accomplices' during the game can help out during battles is handy (and easy to execute) but the combat itself is a little limited.
Nothing too damaging though. This is not a combat based game after all !!
There are stealth elements too - as you creep around with your camera looking for clues to photograph - although don't expect anything as deep as Splinter Cell (well not until mid March anyway - I'm counting the days !! ).
There is a cute story line (of the 'big conspiracy' type ) to go along with the cute gameplay - and plenty of 'objectives' to keep you busy - like earning money by taking pictures of the planets wildlife - which all works very well.
The script and voice acting is well above the norm too.
Gameplay wise this is definitely a 'platformer' but one that spreads its wings into other genres - like stealth and fighting - although its also a game that knows its limits too.
In fact its almost impossible to dislike this game - even if like me its not totally 'up your street'.
If , however, you are a 'platforming' fan and like a game with solid gameplay, some style, a good story and even some humour you could do a lot worse than Beyond Good and Evil.
Its also available very cheap now too!!
