Could somebody please tell me what the big deal is over yet another (all-be-it great looking) FPS ?
I was hoping that the player could at least choose a proper '3rd person' perspective to play parts of this game - especially after seing some of the many screen shots on the various gaming sites on this recent FPS release entitled 'The Chronicles of Riddick' (TCOR).
This is unfortunatly not the case though. The only time you get to 'see' Riddick on screen is during the (so-so) FMV's - or when you climb over or onto crates or traverse overhead on pipes.
This is very dissapointing !
Why u ask?
Well because parts of this game are CRYING OUT to be played in 'third person' view !!
Trying to play the 'stealthy' parts of the game in 'first person' is just very awkward and irritating.
Why you can't choose to 'pull out' to play in a 'third person' view is just beyond me.
If 'Thief' and even 'The Suffering' can do it successfully then with all the money they allegedly spent on TCOR i'm sure it could have been easily implemented.
Or maybe it would be just too damn hard to beat the Unreal/Splinter Cell game engine !
Cashing in on the FPS market is all too easy and tempting though obviously !!
The graphics look very good though - 'normal mapping' is something we can look forward to seing more of in the future - and it looks very impressive in action here.
The environments look very real and textures look very convincing.
Lighting is also good - although not in the Splinter Cell league.
Weapons in the game are mostly of the 'usual suspects' so i wont bother listing them here.
You can shoot out the lights though - which makes good use of Riddicks 'eye shine' seing in the dark abilities that he gets part way through the game.
Story wise this game is set just before the film of the same name - although the story here does get a bit cliched at times.
Voice acting is ok -as it uses Vin Diesel et al - although he sounds as wooden in the game as he does in the movie(s).
Sound design is good - as is the music used - nothing special - but they get the job done. If you have a good 5.1 system you will be suitably impressed.
AI is a bit poor - as guards can be very dumb - especially in the dark. You can even bump into the back of a guard without them realising it.
How lame !
The game is also criminally short !!
I'm not a FPS fan (can you tell !!) but anyone who is could probably finish this game in 8 -10 hrs - which is far too short for a full price game.
No Online or Co-op modes also hurt the long term value
All said and done i just wish a bit more development time had made it possible to play TCOR in 'third person'. (and for longer than 8 hrs too !! )
This would have made the game much more successful and enjoyable - especially in the more 'stealthy' parts of the game.
As it stands TCOR its just another (very pretty) FPS (with poor AI) that can join the (very long) list also being either developed or released this year.
