At best, I can't give this game more than 8.4. I've been tempted to sell it.
I like good weapons, Not more, less powerful weapons. I like precision. Nothing is more satisfying than picking off a ghost-rider with a high powered sniper rifle from 200 yards while their flying full throttle across an open field. If Microsoft has altered the sniper rifle the way they did the pistol, I would have sold the game by now. HALO 2 fails to please hardcore shooters, like me, who especially relish the pistol of the first version. The pistol of Halo 1 could turn your nemesis into a sack of potatoes from full health and shields with three well-placed shots to the facemask. In HALO 2 it takes a laughable 9 rounds to do the same. I like to be rewarded for actually AIMING. Someone correctly figured the older pistol would have overpowered every other weapon in the game – if you were pack'n 2 of them.
Its not a bad game. Anyone with XBOX-LIVE will be happy to have this in their arsenal. The multiplayer levels in Halo 2 are much nicer than in Halo1. You already know all that. I want to express what someone at Microsoft neglected to consider. I'm hoping Halo 3 might be saved.
The Golden Round Theory
The bottom line is that the creators of Halo 2 have lowered the skill level requirements to be deadly. In the old West, the famous sheriff Wyatt Earp, of OK Corral fame, wasn't known for being quick on the draw, but confident and fearless enough to take deadly aim in the midst of being shot at. Knowing that YOUR AIM is more deadly than your opponent's weapon, is the hallmark of a great shooter. Remember the suspense of playing Goldeneye against friends, with just the single shot golden gun. The suspense of taking aim was more thrilling than anything. Eventually, nothing short of a rocket launcher could match your deadliness with the golden round ("One-shot-one-kill", was born)
