The music genre has really taken off over the last few years, and hot on the heels of PaRappa the Rapper 2 comes Gitaroo Man, which while technically being classed as a music game, really adds a level of depth previously unseen to the genre.
Rather than relying on simple button pressing and timing, Gitaroo Man turns each song into a battle, where rhythms must be followed using a combination of the A.stick and button pressing, resulting in some funky guitar riffs backing the base of the song. This is then combined with some more traditional button pressing to create a very unique experience, where players take turns 'attacking' their opponents with music, then defending the counter attack. There is a great depth there, and a lot more to do and master than most games in the genre.
The music itself is great, with great variety and all tracks are well suited to the game itself. The graphics are often crazy and over the top, alot like Samba de Amigo for the Dreamcast, and are great fun to watch while others play, as you are usually too concerned with the intensity of keeping the flow of music coming to notice them yourself in gameplay.
Overall, Gitaroo Man is a very interesting game, and music genre fans will not be disappointed. Of special mention is the great multiplayer mode, where up to four players can go at it, and the game itself and its battle style really suits multiplayer gaming, unlike PaRappa the Rapper 2.
