Super Mario 64 is the gold standard for platformers. It was a game with tight controls and an interesting addictivness to it. This game captures that same experience. It also shares it's flaws.
It has the same type of format with the castle serving a home to all the levels that you move to. If also has some twists such as being able to progress through the game with multiple characters. The multiple character option is sort of a double-edged sword though. It can be cool to expirement with different characters and see what they do to accomplish different tasks. It can also be tedious to swap characters when you need certain abilities to accomplish goals also. Overall it's a cool idea that is worthy of some recognition.
Multiplayer is nothing less than a joke. It is easily the biggest downfall of the game. It gets boring very quickly and really doesn't hold your interest while your playing it. There needs to be some sort of cooperative story in future DS Marios.
Mini-games are phenominal and are more addictive than a kilo of cocaine. The usage of the stylus is very perfectly incorporated into each mini-game it creates a very natural feel between your immediate actions and the game itself.
The camera was a problem in the first game and its still a problem in this one. With the DS controls it's tough to make a good camera but they could of done better than what they have.
Overall the game is very well done and deserves a exceptional score of a 9. The mini-games alone deserve a 7 but the story is as good as it use to be. Mario excels on the DS in an otherwise dismal array of DS titles at launch.
