Eternal Darkness

I suggest anyone who owns a GameCube and thinks there aren't any 'adult' games for it... stop what you are doing right now and go buy this game.  It will change your mind about the whole, "Nintendo is too kiddy" thing.  Plus, you can pick it up for around $20 used.  Not bad deal.

This game is a bit difficult to review.  Usually you start off giving info about the story to give the reader in idea of if they will dig the plot or not.  Well, this game is very complex.  So much so that describing the plot is going to be a chore.  But, here goes.....

You are Alex Roivas.  Your grandfather has just been viciously murdered.  His head was taken clean off and the police have no idea what happened and have no leads.  You then take it upon yourself to find out what happened to your grandfather.  You start the game off in his mysterious mansion.  As you play the game, you discover that your family has a very storied past.  One that involves demon resurrection, time traveling, and some other creepy stuff.

Basically, you find this book.  It's called the "Tome Of Darkness".  As the game goes on you find various pages from this book around the mansion.  Each page is like a chapter in time.  When you choose to 'read' the page, you play the game as the character that happens to be the focus of that particular chapter.  For instance, in Chapter 1 you play as a Roman soldier.  You also play as a monk, acrcheologist, fire fighter, etc., in later chapters.  Each character has his own branch of the story and weapons, items, etc.  You end up (including Alex) playing with around 12 characters, I think.  It's a very epic game in scope and has a very entertaining story, once it gets going.

The story can be a bit confusing at first, but give it a chance.  I didn't really get into it until after a few hours of play.  It may take some time, but give the game a chance and you will end up loving it.

Someone asked me what kind of game this is.  And I honestly could not really put this in any genre, so to speak.  I guess 'Survival Horror' is a good one, but it's not a Resident Evil clone, by any means.  You have much more action and combat here.  You can save anywhere where your character is alone and safe.  Ammo is not scarce (thank God).  And you have the use of "Magick" (yes, I spelled that correctly)...

This is where the game REALLY separates itself from the rest of the 'survival horror' games, if you want to lump it in with that genre.  Throughout the game you find runes.  These runes are used to mix with spell scrolls you find and you can make magic (or "Magick" as this game calls it).  There are the basic recovery, attack, & shield type spells.  You can also summon creatures to help you fight.  There are a few others, as well.  They add a lot to the game.

The graphics are impressive.  This was originally a N64 game.  Even though you will never be able to tell.  Some of the characters look a bit goofy at times and some of the enviroments are bland, but overall the visuals are very nice.  The lighting is what I was especially impressed with.  I just finished Resident Evil before this game, so maybe I would have even been more impressed had I not played that game first.  RE has the best visuals I have ever seen in a console game.  At any rate, you will not be disappointed here.

The musical score, while not being outstanding, definitely is well done.  It never really stands out, but it keeps you in the mood of the game well.  And as far as I am concerned, that's what music should do.

In closing, I would purhcase this game as soon as possible if you have a GC.  I don't think it lived up to all of the hype it received, but it's still a great, creepy, and sometimes downright scary game.  I highly recommend it.
