When I saw the big ad-campaign for this game on TV awhile ago, it looked like a mindless game where you blow everything up. When I first started playing the game, I noticed that you really don't blow up as much stuff as they made it out to seem. And the stuff I was blowing up wasn't giving me a big rush or anything. Then I realized I was playing a Grand Theft Auto game with more guns, explosions, guns, vehicles, & far less hookers.
Gameplay: You start the by picking one of three different mercenaries. Each has it's own strengths and weakesses, but they mostly play the same. Then you hop into the game as a 'merc' for hire. You are thrown into a civil war that is going on in Korea. You are basically sent to the 'Allies' base and you have to accept a mission to 'prove yourself worthy'. After completing this mission, you then get more offers from different countries that are occupying different parts of Korea. The Russians, China, the Allies, etc. all have missions for you to do and earn some cash. Sometimes some of the missions tick one of the other factions off, but that is for you to decide which missions to accept. When you aren't doing missions, you can roam the game world free of restraint and basically do anything you want.
Does any of that sound familiar? Well, if you have played any of the recent Grand Theft Auto games, it should. This is basically Grand Theft Auto 3 with a military story and lots of guns. The story here isn't all that appealing, though. You are after this renegade commander who has fifty-one associates that work for him and you have to take them all out in hopes of finally getting the main badguy. In the game, it's played out like a deck of cards. Each person who works for the main villain, is basically a card in the deck. The first group is the Clubs. After finishing off those guys, you go on to the Diamonds and so forth. That is the main difference between this and GTA3, is that this game is much more mission based and linear. Other than that though, this is just like GTA.
While that may not be a bad thing to some, this game wore on me quite quickly. What starts off as a fun & somewhat unique game, turns into a blatent & repetitive GTA rip-off and never really feels like it's going anywhere. Not only that, but for a game that comes off as a huge action game, this game lacks a lot of great action. It's just mission after mission, until you get rid of all the 'cards in the deck'. Sure the weapons are all fun to use and the vehicles are fun to drive, but even that got old after awhile.
I look at this game as a great weekend rental. It's fun for several hours at a time, looks good, sounds good, and is fun to play for awhile. The problem is that the game didn't have anything to really hook me in and make me want to play it when I wasn't. After reading some of the reviews of this game, I feel it is a bit overrated. Which is ironic to me considering I have always thought the GTA series was WAY overrated.
Graphics: The game does look really nice though. It doesn't really do anything to stand out from the crowd, but it does what it supposed to and the explosions look nice.
Sound: The music is pretty good and the voice acting wasn't hideous, which is what I was expecting from a game like this.
Value: You will spend around twenty hours with this game the first time through. I don't see much reason to come back to it, however. And there is no Xbox Live support to speak of.
Tilt: I guess I wasn't really expecting a lot from this game to begin with. I was expecting some dumb, mindless, blow-everything-up action game. What I got was a GTA clone that was fun for awhile, but got very repetitive and stale after several hours of gameplay. I would give this a rental before slapping down your hard earned cash for a purchase.
