I picked up this game for two reasons.  One: A friend of mine told me it was a good game and I played the Dreamcast version for a short period of time.  Two: It was cheap.  Honestly I am glad that I didn't spend too much money on this game.  This was a good RPG, however, the PS2 version was horrible as compared to the dreamcast version.
First off, the good stuff.  The battle system was very original.  Instead of your typical attack, magic, item, it introduced more strategy to the battle system.  Based on what attack choice you choose (critical or combo) and at what time you choose it, you can cancel the enemies attack or counter their attack.
Graphics in this game, in the majority of cases, is great.  The spells in the battle look super great however do become tiring later on when you have seen them too much.  Also, some of the little movie scenes look cool too.  The bads for the graphics mainly are involved with the PS2 version.  There was alot of graphic glitches and the game slowed down almost all the time when walking around.
The characters in the game were well done.  They each had their own little story that were each developed but each character came together to have a well developped overall combined storyline.
The boss battles were cool and added a good challenge to the game.  However, (hope this isn't a spoiler) the final boss of the game was disappointingly easy.
To sum up, Grandia 2 for the PS2 is great as an RPG but has some shortcomings.  The graphic glitches and slow downs are what makes this game less than what it could have been.  However it is a really good game but I suggest that it should be played on the Dreamcast rather than the PS2.
