Though many say this is a mix between Civilization (II) and RTS, I would have to disagree. Total War tries to incorporate the turn-based strategic aspects of kingdom management into this game. I see it as simply too basic. Each region can be upgraded- whether you are building a fort, mine, or military upgrades. Beware, there are no city views- you are either stuck between the 'kingdom overview or battle view'. The 'kingdom' aspect just provides the game a legit way of 'conscripting' new/better troops.
Gamers should only look for and appreciate MTW for its realistic real time battles. The countless campaigns with many race option provides hours upon hours of gameplay.
All in all, it is a great game- one that remains on top in its respective genre. If you are looking for that 'feudal-warfare-real-time-strategic-type game', MTW is the right choice for you. If you are looking for the proper mix between Age of Empires and Civilization, look for the newly released Rise of Nations.
