I have been an Ecco fan ever since the first game debuted on the Sega Genesis. So naturally when the third game came out for the Dreamcast, I was one of the first to buy it. The PS2 version is a direct port of the Dreamcast version, and there are only a few differences between the two. In the PS2 version, you can enter this 'hall' where you can listen to game tracks, watch movies, etc. of all the levels you've cleared. Pretty, cool, I thought. The other big difference is the purple crystals found throught the levels. These are nonexistent in the DC version but prove to be very helpful in alleviating the "what do I do now?" question.
Now, I'm studying to be a Marine Biologist, so I'm more inclined to buy this game than most people. The graphics are very realistic in this game, although they are not as good as they could have been on the PS2. The way the light reflects through the water, the coloration of the wildlife and plantlife down there is all very realistic. Likewise, the sounds the creaures all make are fairly realistic, along with the movement they make.
The gameplay is not for everyone, however. It is not very action packed, and the only weapon you have is to ram your enemies. Ecco's movement can also lead some people to feel nauseous as well, especially when you're doing acrobatics with him. A final downfall is some of the levels of the game. Some are just too expansive and can leave the gamer feeling lost, and not knowing what to do next. I had a strategy guide from the DC version, so I didn't have those troubles.
All in all, this is a gorgeous game that I love to play. I also love the fact that game pays homage to the previous Ecco games by having two secret 2D sidescrolling levels. For other Ecco fans like myself, it's very nostalgic. The plot is the basic Ecco plot-Some alien race is trying to destroy the planet, and only you(Ecco) can stop them. This time though, you travel to parallel worlds(this will make sense if you play the game). So if you're a person who likes more laid-back adventure games and who will enjoy the beautiful underwater graphics, you should check this game out.
