Pretty disappointing.

After all the hype, I expected so much more from this game.  The first thing that jarred me was how ugly this game looked.  I expected something far more polished.  The character animations are well-done and very life-like, but the cities and the cars look like simple low-poly designs that don't belong in a next-gen game.  Perhaps the problem is that representing the entire city of L.A.  didn't leave them room to add much more detail, but I can't help but think that the graphics could've been cleaned up just a little bit.

Much has been made of the voicework in this game.  Yes, Christopher Walken is great.  Unfortunately, whoever was hired to write the story and the dialogue doesn't come close to matching the level of his talent.

The gameplay is a mix of genres.  A lot of times that doesn't work, because it forces you to play modes you don't care for.  In my case, that'd be the fighting missions.  Still, it's nice to have variety.  Except that I didn't even think these different modes were executed well in the first place.  The shooting controls make you feel like you're playing a button-masher, and the driving missions do a lousy job of letting you know where you're supposed to be going.  Maybe I'm dense, but while the pause menu's large map gives you a general idea of where your target location is, I didn't see anything in the interactive display to let you know which way to go.  Having to pause and check the map every 15 seconds was ridiculous.  I can't help but think I'm missing something...  at the very least, it's very unintuitive.

The story is pretty familiar.  You're a cop with a past and a real crappy attitude.  I suppose he's supposed to be "cool", but I just thought he was a jerk.  Again, if you're going to spend money on professional voice actors, you ought to hire some professional writers as well.

Even though it's supposedly a very short game, this one will go into the pile of "games I never bothered to finish".

Bottom line: If you've played GTA to death and absolutely need to play something similar, you might enjoy this.
